Herbaceous plant with leaves with white spots and serrated margins with large purple flowers. Due to the presence of flavonodignenes (silybin, silicristin, silidianin) endowed with protective properties with respect to liver cells, milk thistle has been widely studied in the prophylaxis and therapy of liver pathologies due to alcohol and toxin intoxication.
This plant also has hemostatic (especially in uterine bleeding), hypertensive, cholagogue, digestive and aperitive properties,
antiallergic, general and venous tonic, decongestants on the portal venous system, regulating the neurovegetative system.
The plant contains, in addition to flavonodignens, tannins, histamine, tiratin and flavonoids.
