Agrimony from Latin argemonia, name of a variety of poppy, used in ancient times against an eye disease called arguema.
The main components are: tannins (agrimony and potentillin), polyphenols, triterpenes (glycosides of oleanolic acid, some alpha amitin and ursolic acid), silicic acid, flavonoids, ascorbic acid, nicotinic acid, traces of alkaloids.
In the plant and in its fresh roots, a bitter substance has been found: agrimolid.
In popular medicine, agrimony is used as a choleretic and cholagogue, in liver failure and congestion, in cholecystitis, in catarrhal enteritis, in chronic catarrhal gastritis. It is applied in chronic, muscular and joint rheumatism.
The aqueous extract has been shown to have antispastic effect. The analgesic properties have been shown to be precious in neuralgia, neuritis, arthritis and periarthritis.
